Viral hepatitis can cause significant morbidity and mortality, with the impact on health determined by the exact form of hepatitis, the geographical region of presentation, and the discovery and availability of new treatments, among other factors. Only a small percentage of cases result in acute liver failure that may require a transplant or even result in the patient's death; the majority of acute presenting types are self-limiting and may even go undetected. However, if they are not identified and treated appropriately, they can develop into chronic conditions like cirrhosis or hepatic carcinoma, as is the situation with the hepatitis B and C viruses.
