Dark circles under the eyes are a common issue we are see, often caused by factors such as aging, poor sleep, dehydration, or genetics. While numerous treatments are available, many are costly or contain synthetic chemicals that may cause side effects. This study proposes a natural solution through the use of corn silk, a byproduct of maize, to develop an eye patch aimed at reducing dark circles. Corn silk is rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, antioxidants, and essential nutrients such as vitamin K, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, soothing, and skin-rejuvenating properties. These properties make corn silk a promising candidate for addressing skin discoloration and puffiness around the eyes. The eye patch is designed to be applied directly under the eyes, allowing the beneficial compounds from corn silk to be absorbed into the skin. It works by reducing inflammation and promoting circulation, which can help to lighten dark circles and restore the skin’s natural tone. The corn silk extract is integrated into a biodegradable fabric, ensuring an eco-friendly and gentle application. Preliminary studies suggest that the combination of corn silk’s antioxidants and skin-enhancing properties can effectively improve the appearance of dark circles by moisturizing, reducing puffiness, and soothing the delicate under-eye area. This natural remedy provides a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to conventional treatments, offering an accessible option for individuals seeking to address dark circles without resorting to expensive or chemical-laden products. Further research is needed to confirm its long-term efficacy and safety for widespread use.
Dark circles under the eyes are a common cosmetic concern that affects individuals worldwide, often leading to an appearance of fatigue, aging, or stress. The causes of dark circles are varied, ranging from lifestyle factors like inadequate sleep and dehydration to genetic predispositions and thinning skin due to aging. While numerous treatments are available in the form of creams, serums, and medical procedures, these solutions can be expensive, contain synthetic chemicals, and may not always provide long-lasting results. As a result, there is increasing interest in natural, cost-effective alternatives that can address this issue without harmful side effects.[1] Corn silk, the long, thread-like fibers found on the husk of corn, has been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to its rich content of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, antioxidants, and vitamins. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory, soothing, and skin-rejuvenating properties, which could potentially help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Moreover, corn silk is easily accessible and biodegradable, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly option for skincare formulations. This research explores the potential of corn silk as an active ingredient in the development of an eye patch designed specifically to target dark circles. The eye patch aims to deliver the skin-healing benefits of corn silk directly to the delicate under-eye area, promoting improved circulation, reducing puffiness, and enhancing hydration. The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using corn silk as a natural remedy in a practical, easy-to-use eye patch and to assess its effectiveness in comparison to conventional treatments. By harnessing the natural properties of corn silk, this eye patch could provide a safe, affordable, and sustainable solution for addressing dark circles and improving overall skin health.[2] Eye Patch – In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, the skin often becomes the first visible sign of stress, fatigue, and aging. Among the most common cosmetic concerns faced by individuals worldwide are dark circles under the eyes. These dark patches can result from various factors such as sleep deprivation, dehydration, sun exposure, genetics, stress, and the natural aging process. The skin around the eyes is particularly thin and delicate, making it more prone to pigmentation, puffiness, and dryness. While numerous commercial products exist to treat dark circles, many are chemical-based and may lead to irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive skin types. This has led to a growing consumer preference for herbal and natural formulations that are gentle, effective, and eco-friendly. While numerous treatments are available in the form of creams, serums, and medical procedures, these solutions can be expensive, contain synthetic chemicals, and may not always provide long-lasting results. As a result, there is increasing interest in natural, cost-effective alternatives that can address this issue without harmful side effects.[3] The increasing popularity of herbal cosmetics has encouraged research into plant-based ingredients that can address specific skin concerns safely and effectively. One such underutilized natural resource is corn silk—the silky threads found inside the husks of corn (Zea mays). Typically discarded as agricultural waste, corn silk is gaining attention in the field of traditional and modern herbal medicine for its numerous health and skincare benefits. Rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, vitamins (such as vitamin K and C), and minerals, corn silk possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and diuretic properties. These properties make it a promising candidate for use in cosmetic formulations, particularly for targeting the sensitive under-eye area. Corn silk contains natural antioxidants that can combat oxidative stress, which is one of the key contributors to skin discoloration and aging. The flavonoids present in corn silk also promote blood circulation, which can help reduce the appearance of under-eye pigmentation and puffiness. Additionally, its soothing and moisturizing properties make it ideal for hydration and skin repair, both of which are essential for treating dark circles.[4]
What are Under Eye Patches?
Under-eye masks are like mini sheet masks for the delicate eye area. Most eye patches curve to fit the contours of the face and are made up of hydrogel material, which helps maximize nutrient absorption and provide fast-acting results. After just one use, eye patches can deliver instant, visible results, and with consistent use, many see results in less than four weeks – and sometimes even quicker. [5]
What Causes Dark Circles and Puffiness?
Dark circles, bags, or puffy under eyes can happen for many reasons, some of which are beyond your control. Here's a look at a few of the most common reasons:
Genetics: Some people have thinner skin under the eye simply because of genetics. It may run in the family if your family members struggle with similar issues.
Dehydration: It will show under your eyes if you don't moisturize your skin daily or drink enough water. A lack of water retention will lead to a parched complexion, causing dark under eyes or puffiness.
Aging Skin: Skin loses its elasticity as you age, and collagen production slows down, which can impact your complexion and lead to bags under your eyes.
Poor Sleeping Patterns: Lack of sleep can cause your under eyes to appear darker or puffy due to fluid retention, different sleeping positions, and tossing and turning throughout the night.
Allergies: Sneezing, coughing, and struggling with the changes in the weather? When you have allergies, your body naturally releases histamines, which leads to puffiness, dark circles, and other skin concerns.
Thin Skin: Some people naturally have more delicate under-eye skin than others, making the blood vessels more prominent, leaving you with a purplish hue.[6]
The Benefits of Under Eye Patches
Whether genetics or dehydration, under-eye masks can help combat these skin concerns and give you a revived complexion. All patches are formulated with different ingredients and have different benefits. When shopping for them, consider which problems you want to address and look for ingredients that target those.
Hydration
Under-eye patches also contain hydrating ingredients like vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid to improve moisture retention and help you achieve a plump, smooth, supple complexion.
De-Puff
Tired of waking up with puffy under eyes? If you're struggling with puffy under eyes, you'll want to look for ingredients like vitamin E, niacinamide, or allantoin to help soothe and calm the delicate under-eye skin.
Skin Brightening
Most under-eye patches for dark circles contain polysaccharides and vitamin C to help illuminate the under-eye area.
Anti-Aging
Under-eye patches can also reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other premature signs of aging, helping you maintain your youthful appearance.
Self-Care
If your skin needs extra attention after a long day, pamper yourself with under-eye patches. Applying them is a great way to help you unwind and relax. The cooling effect of the hydrogel material will help combat stress and help you revive your tiredness.[7]

Evaluation:
Physical Evaluation:
Physical characteristics of eye patches directly influence user comfort, application, and product performance. The following parameters are assessed:
Appearance
The visual appearance is the first quality indicator. The eye patch should have a uniform shape and color without any discoloration, air bubbles, or particulate contamination. A visually appealing and defect-free product enhances consumer trust.[11]
Thickness and Size
Uniform thickness is crucial to ensure consistent delivery of active ingredients across the patch. Thickness is measured using digital calipers at multiple points, and patches should maintain a consistent dimension suitable for under-eye application.
Texture and Feel
The patch should have a smooth texture and soft feel to prevent irritation during use. A hydrogel patch, for instance, should be moist, non-abrasive, and flexible enough to conform to the skin.[12]
5. Weight Uniformity
Weight consistency ensures dosage reliability. Randomly selected patches are weighed, and the average weight is compared to individual weights. The deviation should be minimal and within acceptable pharmacopoeial limits.[13]
Chemical Evaluation
Chemical analysis focuses on verifying the presence, stability, and effectiveness of active ingredients— particularly caffeine in this case.
pH Measurement: The pH of the patch extract is measured to ensure compatibility with the skin, which typically ranges from 5.5 to 7.0. A pH outside this range can lead to irritation or reduced efficacy. A digital pH meter is used after dissolving the patch material in distilled water.[14]
Stability Studies:
Stability testing ensures the chemical integrity and performance of the patch over time. Patches are stored at various conditions (e.g., 25°C/60% RH and 40°C/75% RH) and evaluated periodically for changes in appearance, caffeine content, and pH.[15]
Swelling Index:
The swelling of the hydrogel was done by using water as a solvent. Cut out a piece with uniform centimeter as prescribed and is weighed, where this weight is taken as initial weight (Wd). Then this piece is soaked in the 30ml of water. Keep it undisturbed for 2 hours. After2 hours weight of the swollen patch is taken which is the final weight and denoted as (Ws).
The swelling index can be calculated by using the following equation. Formula:
Swelling index=Wd-Ws×100 Wd
Irritation test on skin: Hydrogel is placed on the skin and held with the help of very thin cotton wipe. After an hour, it is removed and the effect on skin irritation is recorded. [16]
RESULT:
Evaluation of herbal hydrogel under eye patch
The herbal hydrogel under eye patch is a small patch that can be applied in the under-eye area for reducing the under eye dark circles. These patches include herbal products that can reduce the darkness, inflammation, puffiness and helps in giving a cooling effect. These products are free from any harmful chemical ingredients.[17]
Fig 5: Eye Patch Physical evaluation:
The prepared formulation was evaluated for their organoleptic properties such as colour, odour, texture and hardness. The color & texture was evaluated by vision and touch and the odour was evaluated by forming a group of odour sensitive people and sampling was performed. All three formulations have same observation and the result was depicted in the table.[18]
Table 2: Physical Evaluation Irritation test on skin:
Eye patch are placed on skin Surface for 15 minutes & check the impact of eye patch under the eye.[19]
Table 3: Irritation Test On Skin Hydrogel Acidity:
Determining the pH is a crucial parameter. As the pH of the formulation may affect the skin, thus variations in pH will interfere with the natural pH of the skin and may cause harmful effects such as scaling, rashness and skin damage. So it is important to formulate the patch in the appropriate pH to that of the skin. And the pH of all three formulations was determined by using a PH meter and the result are shown in the table.[20]
Table 4: Hydrogen Acidity Test Weight Patch:
The weight of the hydrogel under eye patch was determined by using a weighing balance. Each of the three formulations was weighed separately. It is noted that the weight of the hydrogel increases with the increase in the amount of agar used, which is shown in the table.[21]
Table 5: Weight of Eye Patch Swelling index:
Swelling index was performed to determine the swelling ability of the patch in accordance with the variation of concentration of Carbomer. As the concentration of Carbomer increases, swelling also increase.
Table 6: Swelling Index Thickness:
The thickness is another parameter to be taken into consideration. The formulation should have a uniform thickness all over the area. The thickness was determined by using a screw gauge, which is depicted in the table.[22]
Table No. 7.6: Thicknesses Discussion:
The Hydrogel Patches showed uniform colour, consistent shape and size, smooth texture, and no visibledefects. Adhesive was evenly applied, and all physical attributes met design specifications, reflecting good formulation quality. The thickness of hydrogel patchs are ( F1 & F2) are between the 2.07 & 1.8mm . And Swelling index of (F1 & F3) is between the 9.03% to 9.6%. While corn silk has promising anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it's not a proven or widely endorsed treatment for dark circles. It may help slightly with puffiness and skin tone when used consistently, but results can vary. For noticeable or persistent dark circles, combining natural remedies with dermatologist- recommended treatments (like vitamin C serums, retinoids, or caffeine- based eye creams) is generally more effective.
CONCLUSION:
The preparation of an eye patch using corn silk demonstrates a promising natural remedy for reducing dark circles. Corn silk, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, was successfully incorporated into a soothing eye patch formulation. The results suggest that regular application of this natural product may help improve the appearance of under-eye dark circles, reduce puffiness, and nourish the delicate skin around the eyes. Moreover, this method offers a sustainable and affordable alternative to synthetic skincare products, promoting the use of plant- based materials in cosmetic applications. Further studies and user feedback can help refine the formulation for enhanced efficacy and user satisfaction.
RESULT:
F2 has the highest caffeine (2 gm), which may offer the best de-puffing and brightening effect. F1 has the lowest, suitable for sensitive skin types. F3 offers a balanced mid-range dose.
